Top End Carbon Fiber Rims for Force-R Hand-Cycle. So Sweet…

This past week I was approved for a disabled athlete grant from the Challenged Athletes Foundation (“CAF”), which I applied for in September 2011. I was issued a voucher for Top End carbon fiber rims as an upgrade to my Force-R hand-cycle. My experience with CAF was indeed a good one, and I wanted to share the useful information with everyone.

The Challenged Athletes Foundation’s flagship program “Access for Athletes” steps in where health insurance and rehabilitation end by providing funding grants for equipment such as rugby wheelchairs, hand-cycles, mono-skis (aka sit-ski), and sports prosthetics.

I was injured in 1999. It took around 6-7 years before I would make an attempt at any sort of adaptive wheelchair sports… Don’t follow in my footsteps (or Primo Racer tire tracks). Don’t wait multiple years before trying an adaptive sport.  You may be amazed at what you actually enjoy.

Sit-Ski Freeride in Aspen, CO (video)

To ski or not to ski….

I was always athletic prior to getting injured in 1999 at the age of 16.  Although for some reason it took 6 years for me to get back into any sort of athletic activity.

My best friends have gone snowboarding every winter since we were teenagers.  I would constantly decline their invitation to go after my paralysis in 1999.  It wasn’t that I didn’t want to participate, I was just afraid of what I didn’t know…
