Second Attempt At 150 Mile “MS 150″ via Hand-Cycle

Last year I decided to ride in the 2011 “MS 150″.  It’s a 150 mile ride over 2 days. 75 miles from Miami to Keyt Largo, and 75 miles back the next day.  Although I expected to complete the entire 150 miles, I was unable to do so.   I was only physically able to complete day 1, which was 75 miles. I’d pushed my body beyond a comfortable limit, and reluctantly decided to end my journey.  Feeling defeated, the drive home was long and quiet. Here’s a link to last year’s 2011 MS 150 Miami ride on a hand-cycle.

2012 ING Miami Marathon On A Hand-Cycle

2012 ING Miami Marathon Hand-Cycle

Each year ING hosts a marathon in Downtown Miami called the ING MIAMI.  It’s a 26.2 mile marathon specifically for runners.  Although, the nice people who organize the ING Miami marathon allow disabled athletes to hand-cycle 5 minutes prior to the official start.

I live in West Palm Beach, which is 1-2 hours away from Miami depending on traffic. For this reason, my wife and I stayed at a hotel down in Miami the night before the race.  The marathon started promptly at 6:00am the next morning, and I needed to be there at 5:00am to get ready.   Just the thought of waking up at 4:15am in the morning made me want to vomit.

Attempted 150 Mile “MS 150″ On 1999 Freedom Ryder Hand-Cycle (Video)

75 Miles: Miami, FL to Key Largo on a Hand-Cycle…

Last weekend I participated in the “MS 150″. It was a 2 day 150 mile (75/day) bike ride in South Florida, from Miami Homestead Speedway to Key Largo on May 14-15.  The ride was put together by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which raises money for an important cause.

For the sake of a good challenge, I decided to dust off my old Freedom Ryder hand-cycle and commit to the ride.  I purchased my handcycle shortly after becoming paralyzed in January 1999. Surprisingly, my hand-bike rides well, aside from the fact that it’s 12+ years old, purple, and weighs similar to a tank. So why not assume I could ride the hand-cycle 150 miles in 2 days?!  I approached this ride entirely solo, without anyone biking with me. Basically, that’s because my friend’s are soft (you know who you are).

Lyrics Never Change, But The Meanings Do…

It’s interesting how lyrics to songs we love never change, but the meanings behind those lyrics evolve as we get older.  In middle school I would listen to Pink Floyd albums front to back, not only until I had the lyrics memorized, but until I could sing the guitar solos.  At 13 years old I don’t remember peering into the meaning behind the words.  Now, 15 years later the music sounds exactly the same as it did when I was in middle school, but for me the meanings behind the words have changed dramatically.
